Together with your fertility doctor you have decided to perform a postcoital test or PCT. The postcoital test (PCT) (also known as Sims test, Huhner test or Sims-Huhner test) is a test in the evaluation of infertility. The test examines interaction between sperm and mucus of the cervix.
The test will examine;
- the quality of the cervical mucus,
- presence and survival of sperm cells,
- mobility of sperm cells.
This will be an internal examination, which can be compared to a swab of the womb. The doctor will remove a small amount of cervical mucus for examination. The examination is not painful. The examination can only take place during the days of the cycle preceding ovulation. During the other days of the cycle, the cervical mucus is very ‘inhospitable’ to sperm cells.
The procedure as follows:
As soon as your period has begun, please call our callcenter at 015-2604207 on Monday - Friday between 08.30 - 12.00 pm for an appointment.
The test will take place in the morning from 8.30 a.m. at the Behandelcentrum in Voorburg (Gynaecology department).
Important!
- Abstinence of ejaculation 2 days before the test
- Intercourse the evening before the examination (about 10-12 hrs.)
You will be informed about the most important results of the test immediately after.
After the test further options of examinations or treatment will be explained.
However, the test has a limited value, we only look at the ‘stragglers’, those are the ones that probably will ‘never get there’. In the meantime the really good sperm cells are at their destination.
A negative test, even in the current cycle, does not rule out pregnancy; nor does a positive test guarantee a certain pregnancy.
