Congratulations on the birth of your child. You are receiving this information because your child has an increased risk of developing an infection. Therefore, we would like to highlight some important points for you.

Risk of infection

Your child was born after the membranes were ruptured for more than 24 hours, or there was an increased risk of Group B Streptococcus infection. These bacteria are commonly found in the vagina of many pregnant women and can sometimes cause serious illness in babies. Children in these situations have an increased chance of developing an infection in the first few days after birth.

No issues: you may go home

Your child has been observed for at least 12 hours in the maternity ward or neonatology department. During this observation period, no problems have arisen, so you may take your child home. However, a small number of children may become ill after the first day of life. Therefore, it is important to closely monitor your child at home in the coming days.

Points to note

Below are some important points for you as parent(s)/caregiver(s).
A healthy baby:

Important

It is crucial to wash your hands thoroughly before handling, feeding, or cuddling your child. Washing with water and soap is sufficient.

Have questions?

The signs of infection in a newborn can sometimes be difficult to recognize. Therefore, if you have any concerns or questions, please contact your maternity nurse or midwife. They can always consult with the pediatrician.
