Congratulations on the birth of your child. You are receiving this information because your child has an increased risk of developing an infection. Therefore, we would like to highlight some important points for you.Risk of infection
Your child was born after the membranes were ruptured for more than 24 hours, or there was an increased risk of Group B Streptococcus infection. These bacteria are commonly found in the vagina of many pregnant women and can sometimes cause serious illness in babies. Children in these situations have an increased chance of developing an infection in the first few days after birth.
No issues: you may go home
Your child has been observed for at least 12 hours in the maternity ward or neonatology department. During this observation period, no problems have arisen, so you may take your child home. However, a small number of children may become ill after the first day of life. Therefore, it is important to closely monitor your child at home in the coming days.
Points to note
Below are some important points for you as parent(s)/caregiver(s).
A healthy baby:
- Has a temperature between 36.5 and 37.5 degrees Celsius.
- Has quiet breathing without abnormal sounds.
- Has a pink skin color.
- Is alert and does not feel floppy.
- Is feeding well and has at least four wet diapers per 24 hours.
