Foam ultrasound
Foam ultrasound
The foam ultrasound (foam ultrasound) is a quick way to demonstrate the patency of the fallopian tubes. It is a vaginal ultrasound examination that makes the inside of the uterus and the fallopian tubes visible. This is done by injecting foam into the uterine cavity and the fallopian tubes. The course of the foam is visible on the ultrasound image as a white discoloration.
The procedure
This procedure takes place when you are sure that you could not be pregnant, i.e. in the first half of your cycle before you have ovulated. Your possible fertility treatment can often continue as normal.
During the foam ultrasound you have an empty bladder, a speculum (= duckbill) is inserted and a thin tube (catheter) is inserted into the cervix. The speculum is removed and a vaginal ultrasound inserted. The foam is injected slowly and monitored simultaneously with the ultrasound. Injecting the foam may cause some mild menstrual-like cramps. Afterwards there may be some light blood loss and/or some foam return.
